The Hair-a-ford

Here she is...Miss Hair-a-ford.  Her name is Popper. Don't know why, his first calf was named Twister, second was named Wheatie and now Popper? Hum... She is leading nicely and seems to like being scratched.  The other calf in the picture is Starvin Marvin...who ISN"T starving anymore!

80 Today

Today our Daddy would have been 80 years old.  That is hard to imagine.  He was very healthy up to age 60, then brain cancer got him at 61.  I wonder how our lives would have differed if he were still alive.  How our kids would enjoyed having a Grandpa, how he would have enjoyed them.  How he would have reacted to the things that have come and gone over the last 19 years.  What he'd done about this or that situation.  All that is mere speculation, unworthy of worry.  What I do know is that I had a pretty firm foundation set for me by both of my parents.  In Ecclesiastes 3:2 it says..."a time to live, a time to die"...We better get busy living!

Seven Things You Didn't Know About HSUS

We have told you about David Markosko's website, WWW.HumaneWatch.Org, whose purpose is to watch the efforts and antics of the Humane Society of the US. They published a while back what they call "Seven Things You Didn't Know About HSUS." They spot a spotlight on it again this past week- it's full of good stuff to share with any animal lover who might be influenced by the cheap theatrics of HSUS as they ask for their $19 month to save the dogs and cats in the US against cruelty. The dirty little secret is that if you give them that amount of money- over the course of the year, they collect $228 from you and spent $1.14 on actual animal shelters, based on their 2008 tax returns which dictated what groups they sent money to.


As they explain that the Humane Society of the US is an animal shelter in name only- they add that "HSUS is the wealthiest animal-rights lobbying organization on earth. It agitates for the same goals as PETA and other radical groups, but uses fewer naked interns."


They also touch on how they have raised baskets and baskets of money because of the Michael Vick Dog Fighting story as well as Hurricane Katrina. The Easter Pose....2006 & 2010.  They were 7 & 9 then 11 & 13 now.  New hats just in time for Spring!  Oh..the BE Pea (from the other day) thing was good, needs pepper and the chocolate thing...I'll be looking for another recipe, but I did learn that using Pecan Sandies for crust works pretty good!  Tally Ho!!!

*Cooking

Today I'm cooking....Blackeyed Peas Salad & Choc Layer Dessert.  I'll cook a little BBQ from Roy's if they are open.  I"ll let you know if these recipes make the "Porky & Petunia Pig Out List" or not.  You can try them, here they are:
Chocolate Delight
CRUST:
2 sticks butter, melted
2 c. flour
1 c. nuts (or whatever you like)
Press together and bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. (Use 9"x13" cake pan.) Let cool.
2ND LAYER:
12 oz. cream cheese
1 c. powdered sugar
1 c. Cool Whip (Cool Whip only)
Mix well and spread on top of crust.
3RD LAYER:
1 sm. box instant vanilla pudding
1 sm. box instant chocolate pudding
Beat or mix for 3 to 4 minutes and spread over 2nd layer.
4TH LAYER:
Cover with lots of Cool Whip and nuts.

Blackeye Pea Salad/or Dip (from the Neeley's)
Ingredients


1 large tomato, diced
1/2 medium red onion, finely chopped
1 small red bell pepper, finely chopped
1 jalapeno, finely chopped
2 tablespoons chopped green onions
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves
1/4 cup unseasoned rice wine vinegar
1/4 cup canola oil
1/2 teaspoon sugar
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 (15-ounce) cans black-eyed peas, drained

Directions

Combine the first 6 ingredients in a bowl.
In a separate small bowl, whisk together the rice wine vinegar, canola oil, sugar, and salt and pepper.
Toss all together and let marinate for at up to 8 hours in the refrigerator before serving.

*Snake Man

On the 4H trip each student was allowed to hold this dainty little snake...Junior was a hesitant, yet willing participant.  He really didn't think it was an intelligent nor safe thing to do....must have heard that from his Mother.  Snake Chick to was moving in for the rescue. 

*Where Were You?

This was the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City sometime after 9:03 am on April 19, 1995. 

Husband and I were married and living at Green Acres.  I don't remember exactly what I was up to that day, but I remember being glued to the TV and wondering how anyone could do that to Oklahoma.  

  It is unfortunate they could not have killed him 168 times, once for each of the people he so wrongly murdered.  Along with our friends "Daisy & Onslo" we viewed the site in person.  It was humbling and heartbreaking.  Almost indescribable.  If you have not been to the OKC Memorial you must go.  It is very well done.   A memorial scholarship was set up a year or so later in honor of a little boy baby who was killed in the day care.  He was from a sheep showing family and the plaque in his honor shows him pictured with a show lamb and an Oklahoma State cap.  My neice Michelle was the first recipient.  I cannot look (nor type about) that honor with dry eyes.  Even though we did not know that family, they have blessed our family through their loss.  Their baby would be 15 or 16 now with show lambs in tow.  Do pray for them.

4H

The boys have been on the Citizenship Trip for 4H.  Cowboy Hall of Fame, Zoo and the Tiger Safari.   All good, very tired, school tomorrow.  They are thrilled with the latter!!

This was last summer's successful attempt at biological dog shading for the benefit of Mudder's very overweight and often cranky dog, Speck.  Morning Glories grew up on this partial hog panel which was leaned up against the house.  She enjoyed the shade of the morning glories very much....and bared her teeth to any other dog or cat who ventured near her cool spot.

Here they come again, cozy coolness is just around the corner for dear ol' Speck.  I love flowers that come up every spring!

Another One

When you fall in  love with your cows it is not good. 

When an old girl gets "that look" you know in your heart that she should go, she should leave the premises, donate herself to the leather couch industry, to Sirloin Stockade or to Jello.  One loses clear sight when they fall in love.  Just like squeezing a little more out of the toothpaste, we do the same, "Oh, hubby....she can have ONE MORE BABY".  "I know she had teeth in 1998, surely she'll make it through another winter", "Don't you think we could put her on wheat pasture?"  I am eating those words twice daily as I make a bottle for her baby, of which she did not care for adequately.  Love stops here old girl, feed 'em or leave! 

Starvin' Marvin here is residing currently in the dog pen.  Mort doesn't appreciate the inconvience. 

Happy Bday

The in-laws have birthdays six days apart, so we economized.  The cake was strawberry, chocolate and white.  Tasted very good....Thanks Michelle the Cake Maker!

*Moo-ving Day

Moo-ving day for the heifers started out quite smoothly....as most cow events do.  Plan A: finds Mr. Heifer Moverman honking and pulling them toward the gate, they bucked and ran, moo'd and snorted behind him, following wonderfully...they'd never been out of "the" gate and were not going thank you very much, the playful feed pickup chase was over! Plan B worked and with huge accolades to Mrs. Heifer Moverman who splendidly drove, honked and "sooked" the cattle with the other feed pickup.

 

   Plan B:  Finds Mr. Heifer Moverman and his two darling children pushing on horseback, well the darlings were on horseback, their Daddy was pretending to have a horse....if you squint, you can see him whippin' his horse and holding the reins out so it'll go! 

   It took a couple stops (or maybe 48) to take pictures and to visit quickly with Mark (our neighbor) to ask if he'd block the intersection as we plugged along.  The girls were in their new home within an hour of Plan A.  God Bless wheat pasture, good fences, good neighbors, good husbands and good children and wonderful pretend horses.  

  

Time Goes By

Two years ago this month our parents home burned to the ground. The house was empty and our parents had both passed on previously.  It was April, 2008.   As adults we stood there in the Oklahoma wind and mourned the loss of our childhood home, a place where we threw shoes at our Daddy as he climbed the stairs covered in a sheet and moaning like a ghost.  Where we rocked in our Moma's lap and where discussing calf steering at the table was acceptable. A place that was our home.  A place where we gathered as our parents each passed away.  A place where we ate BEEF by golly and chocolate syrup on biscuits. It still hurts now and then, we know the memories are our best possessions, our family is no longer there, we've grown up and moved on. My boys mourn their Grandma, they miss the freedom and love she provided them in her home 

Two years later the lilacs are blooming, the iris are a couple weeks away from full bloom and the mocking birds have come home!

Oldest has an allergy--ear--snot--ugh issue.  He hurts.  Maybe he shouldn't have tied his scarf so tightly!!

Hubby's Next Project

While out buying new wheels for "Black Betty" I spied this picnic table near the metropolis of Rush Springs, Oklahoma.  I am convinced that hubby will be thrilled to build one for the ppatch!  Don't you think it would be a grand idea???

Will Run For Candy

Easter Egg hunting after church....Junior here was in a very competitive class...10 & 11 year olds don't mess around, egg hunting here is a contact sport..even if it is just after church!

Chocolate Gravy

It ain't like Mudder use to make.  In my chocolate addiction it was determined that I'd try Paula Deen's Chocolate Gravy, I did and it was ok.  OK, only if you'd never had Mudder's Chocolate Syrup.  We had real gravy, no chocolate gravy.  We did enjoy chocolate syrup on pancakes and occasionally on biscuits. PD choc gravy was like chocolate jello pudding,thick and gobby, let's just say it won't make it to the Aunty Mary's Recipies for the Girls file.  Go brush your teeth....thinking of choc causes cavities. 

Easter Morning

Little Pookems enjoyed a nice steak at Cattlemen's the other day and it was divine.  I helped him "enjoy" it.  With all those calories packed on we were in need of exercise.  God provided.   Early this morning, 5:40 am to be exact we were blessed with exercise.  While driving to TURKEY HUNT on this day of youth hunting, someone whom I'll fail to mention drove right off into a terrace channel.....which sometimes after a rain are a bit....muddy...that someone got the feed pick up stuck....after a nice 45 minute walk home Little Pookems and I were well exercised.  Nice half moon light and no traffic provided for a great brisk Easter morning walk.  No turkeys were massacred in the exercising effort of the day.  God Bless You All....Enjoy your day and be thankful for all that you have......

Scarf Shopping

Scarf shopping in Cow Town, OKC.  Jethro "tried on" three colors two of which were acceptable, the third was not....but guess which one he chose?  Yep...it would  look great on him, if he had jet black hair or salt & pepper hair...or if he was my Mudder or a carbon copy of his Daddy. Goodbye nice bright colors...hello GRAY!
